The University of Texas Medical Branch The School of Allied Health Sciences GETTING INVOLVED
Do you like to get involved? Then UTMB Student Government Association is for you! Student Government Association is comprised of representatives from the School of Medicine, Graduate School, School of Allied Health Sciences, and Nursing School. It performs a variety of services and events in- cluding all school dances, TGIF's at the pool, All-Sports Day and a bicycle auction. Meetings are bimonthly and usually fun. Interested? Well read on. There are five representatives from SAHS; four senators and four alternates. If for any reason a senator cannot attend a meeting, the alternate goes in his/her place. The senators are elected by the SAHS student body. Serving as a SGA senator offers an interest ing insight into the workings of UTMB as well as a good way to meet new folks outside the SAHS. Opportunities to work on various committees, on community service projects, and a release from the drudgery of studies are also options SGA offers. If you would like to be a senator, watch for the announcement of elections early in the fall term. See you at the polls! STUDENT SENATE The Student Senate is the representative body of the four schools of UTMB. The SAHS elects four representatives and four alternates each September. They serve as Senators in the Student Government for one year. This body is in control of all funds as well as determining policies of Student Government Association. Senate meetings are held once a month and are open to all students and faculty. It is important that responsible individuals be elected to the Student Senate, since this body spends an allocated portion of your fees. All interested students are encouraged to participate in these elections each year. SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCE STUDENT ORGANIZATION The purpose of the Student Organization is to represent all students within the School, regardless of departmental affiliation or full- or part-time status; to provide input into decisions affecting the students; and to exercise continuing review of School of Allied Health Sciences and The University of Texas Medical Branch policies and procedures that affect students. The Student Organization functions as a liaison between the student body, faculty, and administration of the School on matters affecting student life, and provides various activities throughout the year. In the past, Student Organization has sponsored student luncheons, sports day, Orientation party, Valentine's Day Wine & Cheese party, a Talent Show, and a University wide Health Fair at Galvez Mall. Watch for the committee sign-up sheet that will be posted in the SAHS lobby during the orientation and get involved! DID YOU KNOW??? The council is supported by faculty members as well as by administrative staff and is recognized by UTMB as a viable and creditable council organization. STUDENT EARLY ENROLLMENT SQUAD (ES) The Student Early Enrollment, or Lead Program as it is called for short, proposes that students work with students. The program has grown since being formed during the 1982-83 school year, is a good opportunity for students to assist fellow students. Lead members are used as group leaders, tour guides, and mentors during the new student Orientations. Members are also used throughout the year to provide tours for visiting groups and to serve in various other capacities. A workshop is provided for all new S.O.S. participants. The workshop provides training in leadership and communication skills. An important plus from the S.O.S. program is the opportunity for personal growth that it offers SAHS students who choose to get involved. Interested students should contact the Office of Student Affairs, room 2.202, SAHS. PEER SUPPORT GROUP The goal of the UTMB, All-school Peer Support Team is to give fellow students an informed support system that is comprised of their own peers. Peer support members receive training in active listening skills, communication and problem solving, crisis intervention, referral skills and sources, and dealing with value laden issues.
