Exercise Testing Laboratory

The Exercise Testing Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Kurt Mossberg, has the capacity to perform cardiorespiratory stress testing in most individuals with disability.  Currently, research is focused on the study of specific exercise programs for those with acquired brain injury and individuals who use wheelchairs for the majority of community locomotion.  Studies are underway to develop reliable and valid aerobic fitness tests using specific treadmill, wheelchair-treadmill and arm cranking protocols.  In addition, previous studies have examined the effectiveness of unique arm exercise training programs.  It is hypothesized that improvements in strength and endurance of upper extremity musculature will result in increased functional wheelchair mobility.  Consistent with this approach, previous work has assessed isokinetic torque of the shoulder musculature in wheelchair users.  Another current, but less emphasized, area of research is assessment of patient centered health status in a variety of clinical settings.  These studies utilize health status survey instruments to assess physical and mental status prior to and after a rehabilitation intervention.
