RESC 4361: Rehabilitation
& Home







Syllabus
This course provides the student with the opportunity to develop
knowledge and skills related to long term care of chronically ill and/or debilitated
patients. Lecture topics include: exercise testing and prescription, pulmonary
rehabilitation, home care, discharge planning and case management, reimbursement
payer sources, and alternate care sites.
3 credit hours, 45 lecture hours.
Prerequisites: Senior Level Status or Career Ladder Status
Course Objectives:
- Describe the components of a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
- Describe the operation of a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
- Develop skills in the selection and use of oxygen delivery systems and oxygen
conserving devices.
- Develop an understanding of the aerosol modalities available in the alternate
care setting and maintenance procedures.
- Develop an understanding
of the set up and use of mechanical ventilators in
the home environment/alternate care setting.
- Describe the normal physiologic adaptations to exercise training and the
adaptations of patients with chronic lung disease.
- Describe the procedures for and the parameters that are monitored during
exercise training.
- Develop an understanding
of the reimbursement system that drives the home care
and alternate care markets.
- Describe the current alternate care market.
- Differentiate between long term care, subacute care, and home care.
- Describe the role of the therapist in each of these areas.
- Develop an understanding of discharge planning process and case management.
- Identify appropriate assessments for clients based on the following variables:
- Referral
- Condition
- Setting
- Cognition
- Ability
- Age
- Explore the impact of cultural issues on case management.
- Discuss methods for managing the client with special needs.

COURSE EVALUATION: Students will be given instructor and course
evaluation forms near the end of the semester. These should be turned into the Office of
Academic Affairs at the end of the semester.
NOTE: This course must be completed with a minimum
grade point of 2.0
("C"). If less than a "C" is earned, the student must repeat the
course regardless of the overall grade point
average and will be placed on scholastic
probation.
