Home Care Equipment

8A. Find a web site dealing with discharge planning. Provide a review of the web site for the class. Do not duplicate any of the web sites.

8B. Search the web for a Home Care Company and provide a summary of the site. Please include the services offered, geographical area served, number of respiratory care practitioners, and any other pertinent inclusion or exclusion criteria. Each student is to identify a separate Home Care Company, duplicates will not be accepted. (This may require you to call the company.)

9A. Pick one piece of equipment used in the home. Describe the differences, if any, from hospital issue and explain how your set-up procedure would be different from the hospital environment. Also, give an overview of how you would instruct the patient or caregiver in this equipments use and hazards.

9B. Review the video tapes on reserve in the Respiratory Care Dept. for the following:

Passy Muir Valve (about 1 hour)
Scoop TransTracheal Oxygen Catheter (Phase I - IV)
Companion 2800 Ventilator (about 15 minutes)

Provide several interesting points you viewed on the tape and any personal stories you have from using any of these devices during your student clinicals or career. Also, describe the value of these devices for the patients that you have seen during your time in the acute care setting.

10A. Review an assessment tool that may be used by the home care company. This may be a home assessment tool, patient functional assessment tool or others. Provide the name of the assessment, where you found it, and why you would use this tool. (There are resources in the library that have examples of validated assessment tools.)
